Information for Participants

Students (i.e., prospective research participants) can use Sona to do the following tasks online:

  • Browse a list of currently available experiments (some of which are laboratory-based studies and some of which are online studies)
  • Schedule appointments to participate in laboratory-based studies or cancel appointments to participate in laboratory-based studies
  • Check your list of scheduled appointments for laboratory-based studies
  • Participate in online studies, assign research credits to particular courses in which you are enrolled, and check the number of credits you have earned

For additional information, please read the Participant Instruction Manual.

We recommend that you print a copy of this document for your records.  This document contains crucial information, including the following:

  • Consequences for withdrawing from an experiment after the experiment has begun
  • Procedures for canceling your appointment to participate in an experiment
  • Consequences for failing to attend an experiment that you have scheduled (i.e., "no-showing" for that experiment) without canceling your participation prior to the start of the experiment

If you participate in an experiment (online or laboratory-based), you will be awarded research credit.  The amount of credit that you earn will depend upon the length of the study in which you participate (longer studies are worth more credit) and whether the study is an online study or a laboratory-based study (laboratory-based studies, which are generally less convenient, are worth more credit).

Please be aware that students who fail to attend an experiment that they have scheduled without canceling their appointment prior to the start of the study (i.e., "no-show") will be penalized the number of research credits the study was worth.  The procedures for canceling your appointment to participate in an experiment are described in the Department of Psychological Science Human Subjects Policy and the Participant Instruction Manual.
